The incident took place in Westport.
Westport Police Department Lt. Eric Woods said that there is an active investigation and he could not comment on what took place.
The student illnesses first came to light on Monday, Dec. 19, when Westport Public School Superintendent Thomas Scarice commented on the situation during a Board of Education meeting.
"Last week, there was a school-related incident in which students became ill after ingesting what appeared to be candy," Scarice said in a letter to parents. "This is a terrifying sign of the times and a traumatic experience for the students and families involved."
Scarice said he also could not comment on what took. place due to federal laws that protect student privacy.
"Additionally, I cannot compromise the outcomes of ongoing investigations regarding this issue," Scarice said. "However, I can take this as an opportunity to advance parent education on this topic, and to implore those who care for children to be vigilant about candy, chocolate, and other foods that could contain substances that may pose a health and safety risk to our children."
Next month, on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023, retail cannabis sales will become legal in Connecticut, he added.
"As a result, we expect cannabis to be more accessible in the community, making the necessity of our awareness and vigilance even more important," Scarice said.
He went on to say how important it was to raise awareness and its potential impact on children and teens.
